Anzac small group tour in the Somme
24 - 27 April 2019


Our special Anzac Centenary small group tour starts from Lille on 24 April and ends on 27 April. The tour is led by Annette and Christian, our highly qualified and very experienced local guides. (15 years with us!). In addition to the special Dawn Service at Villers Brettoneux on 25th April, you will visit different battle's sites. For those who have relatives buried in the Somme, your guide will organise side visits to stop at specific cemeteries and give you time to pay tribute to your ancestors. .

  • Day 1 : 24 April

    Pick-up in Lille at the station at 9.00am. Visits will begin immediately: Fromelles: VC corner, memorial the Cobber and Phaesant Wood cemetery. - Pozieres: the Windmill, memorial for animals, the memorial for the 1st division and Mouquet farm. - Thiepval: memorial for the missing and visitor centre. Lunch on the site.
    Visit of Vignacourt and the house where many Australians had taken their picture in the studio of the Tuillier family. Those pictures on glass have been donated to the War Memorial in Australia. Coffee and tea on the site.
    Visit of the Victoria school at Villers Bretonneux.
    Accommodation in Amiens. (Appart'Hotel Odalys Blamont). Lunch and dinner are included.

  • Day 2 : 25 April

    Early start to reach the Dawn service site at the Australian Memorial. To attend the 2018 Anzac Centenary Ceremony, you must register with the Australian Government at time of booking to obtain your Attendance Pass.
    Breakfast after the Ceremony. Visit of the Victoria school and the memorial at Le Hamel. Visit of the new Monash Centre at Villers Bretonneux. Lunch on the site. Visit of Dernancourt, the Somme Valley, Corbie, Heilly Station, Vaux sur Somme where the Red Baron crashed, Albert, Bullecourt.
    Stop at Lille at 17.30 hour to drop 2 day tour visitors. Arrival in Ypres at 18.00 hour for the others. Accommodation at Novotel - Ypres.. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

  • Day 3 : 26 April

    Visit to the "Messines mines" such as Hill 60 along the Messines Ridge. Visit of Poperinge, discover Lysenthoek visitor centre and find out about the evacuation of the wounded. Visit of Flanders Fields museum. At the end of the day Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Accommodation at Novotel - Ypres. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.


  • Day 4: 27 April

    Visit of the Menin Road, the Polygon Wood, the Passchendaele experience museum with a replica of tunnels and trenches. Visit of the biggest cemetery of the world: Tyne Cot in Passchendaele. Visit of the German cemetery in Langemark. Return to Lille station at 17.00 hour Breakfast, lunch included.

Pick-up at AMIENS station at 9.00am Visit to Le Hamel, site of the great Monash’s victory Bapaume Bullecourt, the two costly battles in 1917, the « Digger » memorial Free time for lunch at Arras on the Grand’place Fromelles battlefields: « VC corner » and the « Cobbers » memorial, Pheasant Wood (the site of the discovery of a mass grave) and the new museum Back to Amiens late afternoon. Accommodation at Amiens.(meals not included)

Wednesday 24 April
PIck-up at your hotel at Amiens Visit to the town of Villers-Bretonneux and the Victoria school, including the Franco-Australian museum. The new Sir John Monash center. Free time for lunch at Albert Pozieres, the bloodiest battle in Australian history. the « Lochnagar » mine crater (1916 underground mine explosion) Preserved trenches at Beaumont Hamel Back to Amiens late afternoon. Accommodation at Amiens.(meals not included)

Thursday 25 April
Pick-up at your hotel early morning Dawn service at the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. Only ticket holders will be able to attend the service - registration on the D.V.A. website. End of the tour mid morning at Amiens station.
